As the pavemen of the charges lies in the statement

that I was under the influence of liquor or the Erd. and Erd. ingt.

I wish in the first instance to state for that for nearly three

years I have beez practically a total ebetainer and that for the

last six or seven months prier to the End. Meroh I have taken ro

aloekel in any fern.

I can if required refer te many friends to support

this statement, but at present I wish to refer to Hr. E. Fletcher,

Assistent Colonial Secretary and Mr. P. P. J. Tedehouse, Deputy

Euperintendent of Folioo, whe will corroborate ma.

During the Christmas and Race Holidays although I

was present at a number of dinners and dances I took ne alocholes

refreshisnt.

On the morning of the End. Haroh I was suffering

from a very severe cold and feeling very unwell and miserable but

instead of taking sick leave, I went to my office se usual, and

shortly after arrival I foolishly went out and drank some gin to

relieve my pain from which I was suffering. After my long

abstinence the alcohol had much more effect upon me thar if I had

been in the habit of taking it regularly, and set up a craving which I again feolishly attempted te satisfy by taking further
